Our Story

Rooted in history, growing into the future.

Smeaton Nursery Gardens is set on the Smeaton estate’s historic walled garden, originally built in 1793. Generations of the Hepburn family and later the Gray family cultivated this land, planting the arboretum and creating the lake on the estate. The walled garden first opened as a nursery in the 1960s, and the current team has been nurturing it since 2003.

We continue this tradition of cultivation and community – today Smeaton is not only a place to buy plants, but a destination where local families and garden enthusiasts come to enjoy nature, learn, and relax.

We are proud to be a longstanding part of the East Lothian community, sharing our passion for gardening with visitors from near and far.
